In 1790 an Englishman\u00a0Thomas Saint made something very similar but it started with a different concept, his machine used the more complicated chain stitching process.<\/p>\n<p>Even if Germany and England were the countries where the first prototypes of something able to sew mechanically were built, we are still\u00a0 far away from the concept of the modern sewing machine. The first fully\u00a0 functioning machine was invented in 1829 by a french tailor, Barth\u00e9lemy Thimonnier. His machine used a hooked needle and one thread creating a chain stitch, like Thomas Saint&#8217;s project. In 1830, with the help of the engineer\u00a0 Auguste Ferrand who did the technical drawings\u00a0 Thimonnier opened the first machined based clothing manufacturing company after gaining the successful patent.<\/p>\n<h2>Mass production<\/h2>\n<p>In 1832\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Walter_Hunt_(inventor)\">Walter Hunt<\/a>, an American inventor created the first lockstitch sewing machine, but he didn&#8217;t bother to patent it because he was worried it would cause mass unemployment. In 1844 the English inventor John Fisher designed the first machine which combined all the former ideas. This project was later improved on and built by <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Isaac_Singer\">Isaac Merritt Singer<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Elias_Howe\">Elias Howe<\/a>, who also invented the zip closure.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-5866 \" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/Patent_11161-247x300.jpg\" alt=\"sewing machine\" width=\"270\" height=\"328\" \/>(Elias Howe project)<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-5932 size-medium\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/Elias_Howe_portrait-270x300.jpg\" alt=\"sewing machine howe\" width=\"270\" height=\"300\" \/>(Elias Howe)<\/p>\n<p>In this period a small production of sewing machines started. In 1851 Singer invented the first machine with a horizontal arm and a pressure foot this is a system that keeps the fabric stable under the needle. These sewing machines were hand operated and they were quite difficult to use, for this reason the foot pedal was introduced later to free the hands. Many years later, the Singer company built the first machine with an electric motor and in 1975 it produced the first electronic machine in the world (Athena 2000).<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-5864 \" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/Edward_Harrison_May_-_Isaac_Merrit_Singer_-_Google_Art_Project-224x300.jpg\" alt=\"sewing machine Isaac Merritt Singer\" width=\"269\" height=\"360\" \/>(Isaac Merritt Singer) \u00a0<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-5871 \" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/1280px-Singer2-300x217.jpg\" alt=\"sewing machine singer\" width=\"271\" height=\"196\" \/>(Singer machine)<\/p>\n<p>In 1862 in Germany, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pfaff\">Georg Michael Pfaff<\/a> a brass instrument maker, finally managed\u00a0 to construct\u00a0 his first sewing machine. After seeing one at a fair many years earlier being completely fascinated by this new object, he decided to stop production of the musical instruments and dedicate himself entirely to this new project.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-5875 \" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/Georg_Michael_Pfaff_3-184x300.jpg\" alt=\"sewing machine Pfaff\" width=\"279\" height=\"455\" \/>(Georg Michael Pfaff)<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-5893 \" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/pfaff-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"sewing machine pfaff\" width=\"279\" height=\"209\" \/>(Pfaff machine)<\/p>\n<h2>Sewing machines in Italy<\/h2>\n<p>In <a href=\"\/en\/2018\/09\/28\/made-in-italy\/\">Italy<\/a> the first company that produced machines in this sector was Filotecnica Salmoiraghi in 1877. This distinguished brand is well known for the great <a href=\"\/en\/2019\/05\/18\/quality\/\">quality<\/a> of its products and also for its numerous innovations. For example it was the first company to produce a machine that could make buttonholes. Around 1920 another Italian company Virginio Rimoldi di Milano started to make the first sergers. These machines could cut the fabric whilist sewing. This was a new step for the industrial garment production, in fact, this new machine whilist decreasing the production time was also more accurate.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-5879 size-medium\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/tagliacuce-rimoldi-za--300x200.jpg\" alt=\"macchina da cucire rimoldi\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/>(serger Rimoldi)<\/p>\n<p>The best known brand, which is in fact still active today in the sewing sector, is without a doubt Necchi. Vittorio Necchi, wanted to make a domestic sewing machine using for production his familys steel works in Pavia. He started with the\u00a0 model &#8220;BD&#8221; and then followed up with the innovative &#8220;BU&#8221; a machine which was able to zig-zag. Making it, in 1939, one of the first machines capable of embroidery. Finally the &#8220;BF&#8221; and in 1950 the\u201cSupernova\u201d machines which are still today at the technological forefront. In 1956, the &#8220;Mirella&#8221; designed by <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Marcello_Nizzoli\">Marcello Nizzoli<\/a>, in addition to winning\u00a0 various awards for its technical qualities was placed in the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Museum_of_Modern_Art\">MOMA<\/a> museum in New York for its innovative design.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-5881 size-medium\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/necchi-mirella-300x215.jpg\" alt=\"macchina da cucire necchi\" width=\"300\" height=\"215\" \/>(Necchi Mirella)<\/p>\n<h2>Sewing machines nowdays<\/h2>\n<p>Today, the modern machines, differ only in the use of electronics and a few pneumatically operated details which help to speed up the productivity.
